Pebble Beach 2013

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance of 2013.

Leland’s father had been to Pebble Beach with his friend J. B. Nethercutt many times over the years. Tom Powels had even supervised some of JBN’s cars on the field when Tom was on the board of directors for the Nethercutt Collection. However, he never entered any of his own cars.

In 2013, Pebble Beach decided it was the year of the Simplex automobile in the horseless carriage class as well as the Lincoln Automobile in the classic class.

Being lucky enough to own both of these rare marques at the time Leland felt that he must submit.

After being accepted with both cars Leland pulled onto the field of Pebble Beach that Sunday with a 1912 Simplex that had a maintained 35 year old restoration.

Leland and his father had done the work themselves in 1980’s. The biggest surprise was being awarded a beautiful third place trophy the very first time a family car had been on the field.

As I look back on my entire life of automobile and motorcycle-ism, I see my epitaph. It sounds something like….” Here lies the creature of the wheel, lord of the infernal engine.”
